Industry Focus
Molecula's sole focus is extracting full value from lipid molecules. We do this by applying practical chemistry to produce single, well-defined molecules that directly solve long-standing processing and technology limitations in today's biodiesel industry.
Our approach starts with making biodiesel (FAME) production reliable and economical by eliminating the industry's single biggest operational issue: soap formation.
Current catalyst systems are caustic-based and inevitably form soap, depending on the level of free fatty acids and moisture in the feedstock. Soap causes emulsions that delay phase separation and slow the ability to reach ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 specifications. Because soap remains partially soluble in the biodiesel phase, water washing becomes necessary - adding cost, time, and operational complexity.
The solution was straightforward: develop a catalyst that does not produce soap and remains in the glycerol phase.
That solution is ProCat® 50.
With soap eliminated, secondary processing steps such as water washing are no longer required. This enables faster batch turnover, simplified operations, and true process automation and intensification. The resulting glycerol stream is soap-free and easily conditioned for salt-free distillation or direct glycerol valorization.
Depending on the existing plant configuration, implementation of the Molecula system can deliver capital payback in less than six months, while achieving optimized manufacturing costs for biodiesel production.
A further advantage is the production of >98% crude glycerol, providing an ideal entry point into the renewable chemicals market - an established industry valued at over $20 billion.
